National Provider Identifier Summit
Presentations - October 10,
2006
You have less
than eight months left to get and implement your NPI…avoid the risk
of disruption to your cash flow.
The National Provider Identifier (NPI)
will be your standard unique identifier for HIPAA standard electronic
transactions as well as paper claims in Minnesota. HIPAA requires the
NPI to be used by all health plans (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid and other
private health insurers), clearinghouses and providers, including
physicians, pharmacists, dentists, chiropractors, nurse practitioners,
etc., by May 23, 2007. Every health care provider and provider
organization should obtain an NPI.
Getting your NPI is the first step in
the process of meeting the compliance date. Once you have your NPI,
you may need to modify your existing processes and systems to
accommodate use of the NPI. You may also need to share your NPI with
health plans and other health care providers with whom you do
business.
