General 5010 Implementation Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I obtain the 5010 companion guides?
Per Minnesota state law Minnesota payers and providers must comply with the 5010A1/A2 Minnesota Uniform Companion Guides (837D, I, & P, 835, 270/271, NCPDP D.0, and 277, 999, & TA1 Acknowledgement) which are currently available on the AUC website. http://www.health.state.mn.us/asa/index.html For the remaining transactions (276/277, 278, 820, & 834) the national standards are followed or you can check a specific payer’s web site. Out of state providers should also check specific payer’s web sites for guide to use.
How do I contact a specific Collaborative member organization for some question not covered in their FAQs?
The testing contact information for each member can be found by going to the Collaborative web site (www.mnhipaacollab.org) and clicking on ‘Work Groups’ and then on ‘Transaction Contacts’ and the specific member you need to contact.
How can I test my transactions to verify that they are 5010 Minnesota Companion Guide compliant?
The Minnesota HIPAA Collaborative provides a free testing site for 5010A1/A2 Minnesota Uniform Companion Guide compliance. http://www.mnhipaacollab.org/
What transactions will Collaborative members implement under 5010?
Members will exchange the 5010A1/A2 version 837 claims (I, P, and D), 835 remittance advices, 270/271 eligibility inquiries and responses, and one, or more, of the acknowledgement transactions - 277, 999, and TA1. (Specific member sites should be viewed for 276/277 claim status inquiries and responses, 278 referrals and authorizations, 834 benefit enrollment, and 820 premium payment.)
Do I need to verify my transactions are 5010 compliant on the Collaborative’s Free Testing validation site before testing with a member?
Yes. If your organization is not currently using the Collaborative’s Free Testing site you should sign up for this service at www.mnhipaacollab.org.
Can I use attachment codes other than the general code – OZ?
Yes, when using attachment codes the more specific the better. Use of specific codes; such as, M1 for medical or CN for consent, will usually get your transactions routed to the appropriate function quicker. This is put into the 837P, 837I, and 837D in the PWK segment.
When can I begin submitting my 5010 transaction for production?
As soon as you and your trading partner are in agreement to begin production exchanges. A word of caution – it is important that all the links (clearinghouses, etc.) that your transactions pass through are handling native 5010A1/A2 transactions. If at some point in this process your transactions are being converted to 4010A1 and then back to 5010A1/A2 you need to be concerned with possible data truncation. Also, you should be aware of the retention practices of each entity handling your transactions.
